Victa Airtourer, new shots.

Recommended Posts

Have to say I'm really looking forward to this.

Did my first solo in one of the earlier models at the Wellington Aero Club back in 1966.

The club had six of them.

Not the prettiest of machines but a delight to fly and very robust, handling the wild Wellington weather with relative ease.

In those days you shared the Wellington circuit (pattern) with Viscounts, Friendships, DC-3s, Bristol Freighters, Lockheed Electras and the occasional RNZAF Short Sunderland flying boat which used to operate from Evans Bay which adjoins the airport.

Could be quite challenging at times mixing it with the big boys, but great experience that has stood me in good stead as an aging recreational pilot these days.

Then it was time to get a tail dragger rating at the Nelson Aero Club on these.

After the Victa, the Cub could be a bit of handful for a novice pilot but they remain my favourite light aircraft of all time.
