useful tip Calling all FSX "misfit" (non-fitting) airports

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

With the southern section of OLC_NA not all that far away I thought I'd ask for our users to note in this thread any FSX airports that don't fit  the "Vector" landscape.  This assumes you have Vector installed with it's updated lakes, shorelines, roads, etc.  I'm sure there are many of these "misfits" are out there and there's no way I will be able to spot them all, but I can generally correct the airports which I would like to do so our enjoyment of the upcoming OLC_NA will be as satisfying as possible.  An example of a "missfit" airport is UT68, shown here as a before and after revision.  This revision of UT68 is part of  Freeware Pack 25.

Not necessarily a misfit but would like to see my hometown airport CBS8 get some love....it recently made the news as it is about to get a 1000' extension so larger planes can land there. Wayne Coulson - owner of the famous Martin Mars water Bombers has a base there for his 2 plane fleet of converted C-130' s for firefighting....incidentally - for those of you who know me - know I write passionately  about the Martin Mars - of which one is moving to Pensacola's Air Museum soon; the other of which - sadly, due to partisan based political funding has lost it's contract to the aptly named ConAir. - http://www.albernivalleynews.com/news/370162631.html?mobile=true

The contract was awarded for an as of yet un-tested, un-built plane......unbelievable.....

Hi Greg,

CBS8 is part of PNW so would need to be fixed as part of a Service Pack for that region.

@Ronny- you, or someone, suggested it for a freeware airport but it makes a good example of how misplaced some of the FSX airports are, generally small ones but they are really noticeable with the vastly increased accuracy of the "Vector" files.

Hi pocketwatch50,

I took a quick look at KABQ and see none of your issues.  I have Global and Vector installed and that is all ORBX has available for that area.  Possibly a non ORBX file for KABQ active as well as the default FSX airport.

However, this thread is for noting "misfit" airports, not airports with issues, but thanks anyway.

Thank you very much for doing this, Neil! Here (with screenshots) are some airports that I found that may fit into the "misfit" category. The issues with some of these airports are minor (I debated whether to include some of them because of this), while others are more severe.

6A5 - Warf Airport - Reidsville, NC (Not only is this a "misfit" airport, but it is also modeled in a rather bizarre fashion in default FSX when compared with the real airport.)

http://fsfiles.org/flightsimshotsv2/image/G6KE

8A6 - Wilgrove Air Park - Charlotte, NC (This airport may not technically fit into the "misfit" category; the issue with it isn't immediately obvious. The problem shown in the screenshot below is that the airport is located south of the roads and railroad cutting through the airport clearing. In real life, the airport is located to the north of these roads and railroad.)

Thank you BPL,

I've added these as the first group of airports to be looked at.  The "fix" these may come in different packages, ie: degree of detail, but all will be taken care of.

Thank you very much for that, Neil! B) I may look around some other places to see if I can find some more to add here. Most of those that I listed were in North Carolina. I checked quite a few of the airports in NC, since that's my home state. I'll try to take a look at some other places, too, if I get a chance.

Thanks again!

Hi again BPL,

I've done the first 5 on your list to see how hard these are to be.  Not too bad.  I'm thinking on how much upgrading of the buildings/objects I should do and I'll need to talk things over with JV to see what we could/should do.  There are 100's of airports that may need to be "fixed" so it will make a difference in how much detail we give each of them.

Cheers, Neil

Wow, you work fast, Neil! I can certainly understand if you need to limit the detail, considering the sheer number of airports that will need to be done.

I just noticed that I made a mistake in my list above. I have on the list "KRHP - Western Carolina Regional Airport - Andrews, NC." That should actually be "1A5 - Macon County Airport - Franklin, NC." Sorry about that. It was late when I was making the list, and I was probably a little tired. ;)

Ashland KAVL, Runway 34 aircraft wheels sinking into runway. Please disregard. I just realized I was in slew mode. Wheels appear ok when out of slew mode.

Hi Neil, I will take a look at some in Alaska this week.  In the meantime, CBS8 should be fixed by Pilots regardless of being in a region if it is incorrect with just vector and no region installed (it is).  It is a vector problem and should be fixed as such.  If there is also a problem when the region is installed, that is a totally different situation.

Hi Geezer,

CBS8 is not a misfit airport but one the user would like to be updated to show an upcoming 1000' extension.  I'll work on those that are really misfits.  By the way I sent a number of "fixes" on to Bernd for a 1.40 Vector upgrade that's in the works.

Hi, I looked at it and it had a stream running under the strip but it didn't create a problem.  So ok.

Here are a few more and I'll do more later this week.

78K Yes Bay Lodge

KTB Thorne Bay

13Z Loring

I promised Nick I would no longer discuss that and I won't.  But I will tell you a story.  True story.  There's an individual who has had a mesh business for several years.  He has an excellent reputation among his customer base.  About 5-6 months ago I bought my first mesh from him.  It was 10m of the entire continental United States.  What he did, he looked at every single airport, and there are a lot in the US, and if it had a plateau or ditch, he fixed it before the product was sold.

FSX Windows 10 NA NRM v150 misfits.

CAJ3 Creston BC elevation misfit

CAV4 McBride BC elevation misfit
CAA8 Invermere BC elevation misfit

If you have time have look. Thank you

Hi CED,

1) Your issues with NRM airports seem to be the elevation adjustments in Scenery/World/Scenery aren't active.  Try recycling FTX Central to Global and back to NA.

2) The weird patterns are cause by "grass" that isn't showing the texture, only the structure, I have no answer for that.

And also this thread is for issues pertaining to Vector vs stock FSX airports that are non-fitting due to it's increased accuracy in roads, lakes and shorelines.

@ Geezer, I've noted those airports to work on.

Edit: Their finished, just looking into the best way to get them into Vector 1.40

Hi Neil, here are a few more.  Unless I missed one or two, I've now checked all in the area.

TKL  Taku Lodge

5Z1  Juneau Harbor

BQV  Bartlett Cove

Question - Do you know what all will be in the 1.40 update?

OT question - I've seen that you are involved in making the freeware scenery.  As you know several have been taken out so as not to conflict with payware programs.  Most are from CA but also from AZ, NV and CO.  Is it possible to get a copy of the freeware scenaries that have been discontinued?

And thanks for your help.  I tend to get crabby when frustrated so just ignore my crap.

Hi Geezer,

I'll do these last 3 and send them on.  At present I don't know what all is in 1.40, sorry.

Contact me directly via the "messages" envelope at the top of this page concerning the removed freeware airports.

Cheers, Neil

Hope it is not out of topic, but as John Venema wrote on March, 20th

Quote

We have been working on a service pack for Vector which in fact does rectify many airport locations worldwide which our more accurate coastlines orphaned, and this will be released in due course, when it's ready and has been tested.

I would like to mention outside NA, SABA in the Netherlands Antilles.

Hi Neil,
The airport at Eek Alaska (PAEE, but FSX lists it as EEK) is in the wrong place and the runway spans a river.
The real airport has been moved and is now west of the city with a longer runway, so that's the location that's needed and not the older smaller airport.

The current FSX airport is not in the correct place for either the old or new EEK airport though.

I am sorry, I checked various Saba free addon available through "Freeware Scenery List" and only one fits with Vector redefined coasts...

Here the results for those interested...

1 - Original with Global + Vector + FreeMeshX

2 - With Saba.fsx addon

Hi David,

Thanks for the report, I'll put it at the western location.

@GAAB, I've put SABA at it's correct location.

All changes I've done and  am now doing will be in Vector 1.40 which is currently in beta.

Hi all,

I've fixed all that have been mentioned so far.  Anything in the Americas is fair game to be fixed so long as it's a "misfit", those above all fall into that classification.

FWIW Taku Lodge is already done in the RTMM Scenery and prior to releasing Taku Lodge in real life was contacted to seek approval and RTMM was threatened with a law suit if it was released.  After a long drawn out series of e-mails they finally realized this was for a freeware computer simulation and not for commercial use.

Although the Global Airports are freeware they are connected to a commercial enterprise (ORBX).  It may be prudent to check with Taku Lodge prior to doing the scenery. (PS: IRL there is no land airport at the location only float plane operations)

RTMM also has done Juneau 5Z1 already.  Although it is just a water runway the scenery is at PAKT so if you use ORBX PAKT that scenery will apply.

Hi Spud,

These 3 "airports" are all in truth FSX water runways and all I've done is move them into the water, no more.  These are not "freeware" airports, they are fixes to issues caused by the much more accurate road, coastlines and lakes that Vector provides.  Anyone who uses the RTMM scenery's are still able to use them so I don't see any issue with doing them.

I just recently finished doing a free version of NAS Alameda California circa 1970-1993.  That airport has been closed since 1993 and runways and taxiways are closed.  Its original designation was KNGZ and it is NOW NGZ officially in the FAA register as in FSX default and also in ORBX correctly.  One of the members at the Sim Outhouse posted screenshots of ORBX NorCal scenery which you beautifully rendered (much better than I did being a very rank amateur airport designer) and certainly better than FSX mushy residential areas.

My question is:  If I were to purchase ORBX NorCal am I able to access NGZ and reactivate the runways and taxiways as I did with ADE1.65 in FSX?  Below is my airport overlaying FSX default scenery.

BTW, I downloaded that area of California from Bluesky Scenery and activated it in FSX but it "messes" with my airport so I removed it.  I am not sure what ORBX scenery and my ADE1.65 NAS Alameda would do together.

Hi tgycgijoes,

You can override our Alameda NAS using ADE, make sure you include an airport background exclude and match the altitude, NCA uses more accurate mesh.  You may also have to remove the objects file (FTX_NCA_objects_NGZ_PLC) but I'm not sure about that and make sure your version is at a higher priority (adding it to your Addon Scenery should do the trick).

However, this is a thread for reporting "misfit" airports so if you have more questions please contact me via the "messages" envelope at the top of this page, thanks.

Cheers, Neil
